Final Round Results

Report

Atletico Marte of El Salvador, which may be claimed as the “Irish” team in Central America due to the probable origins of organised Athletic Contests in the Tailteann Games in Ireland in 1600BC, won the CONCACAF Cup-Winners’ Cup in 1991 despite losing the last game in the Final Round Group 0-1 to Communicaciones of neighbours Guatemala. Atletico Marte had won their two previous games in the Final Round in Guatemala 1-0 versus Universidad Guadalajara of Mexico and 4-1 versus Caribbean qualifiers Racing Club of Guadeloupe. Ancient History of Athletics

The Tailteann Games are an Ancient Sporting and Athletic Event hosted in what is today Teltown in Co. Meath, Ireland. The background to these games, which folklore scholars believe date back to 1600BC, approximately 900 years before the Olympic Games in Greece, are that they were a tribute to the Goddess Tailtiu, the wife of Eochaid mac Eirc, the last of the Fir Bolg High Kings. Tailtiu was foster mother to Lugh, a member of the Tuatha De Danann, an invading force in Ireland which defeated the Native Fir Bolg (as accounted in the “Book of Invasions”). After Eochaid mac Eirc’s death, and also Tailtiu’s death (possibly while clearing land for agriculture), Lugh instituted the Tailteann Games in her honour near the seat of the High Kings in Co. Meath. [References: 2-3]

The Games themselves ran for hundreds of years from the July fortnight up to August 1. events included Hurling, Long Jump, High Jump, Running, Spear Throwing, Boxing, Sword Fighting, Archery, Wrestling, Swimming, Chariot Racing, Strategy Games and crafts, storytelling, singing and dancing – all competitors attempting to be crowned best in Ireland. Recap

Barbados, whose population are partly descended from Irish captives sold into slavery during Oilver Cromwell’s invasion of Ireland [References: 4], did very well in their opening Group match in the CFU Caribbean Cup Final Round in Trinidad, by drawing with Caribbean power and hosts Trinidad & Tobago 1-1. Barbados had less luck in their subsequent matches, losingb 0-2 to Haïti three days later and 2-3 to Martinique in their final match. The Sydney Joseph Group was the stronger of the two groups in the Final Round, with both traditional Caribbean powers, Trinidad & Tobago and Haïti going on to meet in the Final, which Haïti won 2-1. Martinique would also be a very strong team in Caribbean football. The other group, the Bobby Sookram Group featured Guadeloupe and Cuba, who qualified for the Semi-Finals ahead of Guyana and St. Vincent & the Grenadines. [References: 2]. Report

Five Irish Soccer played in Major League Soccer in 2013: Robbie Keane starred in 25 games, scoring 16 goals for Los Angeles Galaxy, Jonny Steele (Northern Ireland) played in 24 games, scoring 5 goals for New York Red Bulls, Darren O’Dea scored one goal in 17 games for Toronto FC, Andy O’Brien played in 16 games for Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and finally Peter McGlynn, was on the San Jose Earthquakes squad.

In Addition, Gloucester Celtic of Ottawa won the Canadian National Cup – the Canadian Challenge Trophy Final, the team with an Irish name defeating Surrey United Firefighters 3-0 in the Final.

In Mexico’s Liga MX, Atlante Cancun finished 17th of 18 in both the Apertura and Clasura Championships (Opening and Closing Championships). Atlante Cancun are named after the Atlantic Ocean, which is in itself named after Atlantis, what some archeologists believe may be the Tin Mining Regions of Ireland and Cornwall, known to the ancient Greeks. The name Atlantic Isles is also used instead of the British Isles. [Reference: 6-7].

Note: In Central and South American Soccer Championships, the season is divided into Apertura and Clasura (Opening and Closing Champiobships), with two separate Champions for the two halves of the season, decided by playoffs as in North American Sports. As with all North American Sports, Major League Soccer is divided geographically into Conferences, with playoffs determining the overall Champions.
